Tips for reducing fire risk

Maintenance - the key to reducing fire hazards

The first thing to do around the home is to ensure that all trees are under your control and all branches are trimmed so that they do not overhang the building and do not pose a problem in strong winds.

Seek the advice of a professional tree lopper. Remember if a tree falls on your roof in a storm your insurance company may not pay all the damages if you had planted the tree too close to the building.

When planting trees around the home select fire retardant species. Your local fire brigade and nursery will advise you with your selection.

Clean out all roof and valley gutters regularly, to save time and frustration fit a fire proof gutter mesh system.

Check all roof sheets and tiles to make sure that they are all properly secured to the manufacturers specification.

Remove cardboard cartons and any other loose rubbish from around and under the building.

Establish open clear areas around the property boundaries as fire breaks.

If you have an open deck make sure that all flammable material is removed during the fire season.

Thoroughly inspect all watering points and make sure that all taps are fitted with hoses that are long enough to reach all around all buildings and there are enough hoses for a number of people to use at any one time.

If you are on tank water make sure that all catchment pipes are leak free and that you have adequate emergency water supplies.

Fit Fire Plugs™ in the downpipes so that roof gutters can be filled with water quickly and easily.

Remember a roof is like an aeroplane wing, when the air/wind rushes over it, it creates lift/vacuum in the ceiling space, and burning embers are sucked from the gutter into the ceiling and wall cavities and invariably the house burns down.

In high fire risk areas, fit wire/fire proof window screens. Don’t leave anything that can burn up against a building, especially plastic, even outdoor furniture.

Make sure ALL family members are “fire and emergency” trained for maximum safety.
