System maintenance

Ensure the system is maintained. This is one of the most important factors in ensuring good quality water. All components, including gutters, rain heads, water diverters and water tanks, should be serviced regularly. Consideration should be given to registering your rain harvesting system with the local Council.

Regular preventative and servicing maintenance is a must to ensure safety & continuous quality control.
General

It is important to ensure that your home or building complies with all the relevant Federal, State & Local government statutes and that you continuously keep yourself informed in relation to your local Council’s seasonal and special circumstances requirements.

Regular maintenance is required both inside and outside of the home or building. It is important when carrying out maintenance to ensure that you are qualified to be doing what you are about to attempt. Some plumbing and electrical maintenance will require the services of professionally qualified tradespersons.

When carrying out maintenance yourself ensure that you wear appropriate protective clothing and safety items such as protective eye wear, gloves and footwear.

Water catchment and storage

It is important to maintain the system to ensure that the water quality is at its best at all times.

Roof Gutter, Rain Heads, Water Diverters and tank screens should be checked regularly. Check all rain head and tank screens and ensure that they are in good condition and are fitted to prevent mosquitoes entering the system. Drain First Flush Water Diverters and remove the main drain cap to dump any large rubbish, clean the flow control valve and screen.

Make sure that the overflow screen from the tanks are clear. Flap valves are cost effective and are better than most fixed screens because they are mostly self cleaning.

Make sure that the roof gutters are not ponding water especially at the corners and that the gutters are in good condition and not rusting.

Check inside the home/building to ensure that all taps are in good condition, replace tap washers if the tap is hard to turn off.

Regular maintenance should include:
· Keeping roof catchments clean and clear of moss, lichen, debris and leaves;
· Cutting back trees and branches that overhang roofs;
· Regular inspections and, if necessary, cleaning of gutters;
· Cleaning gutter and tank inlets and screens every 3–4 months;
· Disinfecting the supply, if tank contamination is apparent;
· Inspecting tanks annually and cleaning them out if necessary; and
· Testing the water periodically.
